Today's story

Today's story from Israel

Every weekday, a story Israelis are reading, rewritten at four levels by our editors and read aloud. Translation, audio and nikud on every word, so you can read real Hebrew long before you could manage a newspaper. This is today's.

Sing what Israel is singing

Sing what Israel is singing

Israeli songs with line-by-line translation and audio in sync, from current pop to the classics everyone knows. Learn Hebrew with songs and the words arrive with a melody attached, which is why they stay.

Four levels, from first steps to advanced

Every story is written at four levels. Pick the one where you understand most of it without tapping every word, and move up when it feels easy. Same story, same facts, more Hebrew each time.

  1. 1
    Level 1

    First steps

You know the alphabet and a few hundred words. Short sentences, the most common words, nikud on. Stories you can finish.

  2. 2
    Level 2

    Getting around

You can manage a simple conversation. Longer sentences and the vocabulary of everyday life. Roughly where a first ulpan leaves you.

  3. 3
    Level 3

    Confident

You read Hebrew, but a newspaper still tires you. Real sentence structure, idioms, less common words. The Hebrew of the radio news.

  4. 4
    Level 4

    Advanced

Close to what Israelis read. Full vocabulary, long sentences, nuance and the occasional slang. Translation and audio are still one tap away.

Practice that fits in a coffee break

Every word you tap goes to My Words and comes back as a flashcard with spaced repetition. Word Snake turns the review into a game: steer the snake to the right translation, and a wrong answer makes it longer. Six grammar games drill verb forms on real verbs. All of it works on your own, with no class and no partner.

Word Snake

Steer a snake to eat the right translation of the word shown, out of four. A wrong answer makes the snake grow. Every round counts toward your spaced repetition, so a game on the bus is a review session. Free mode and a nikud switch included.

Hebrew grammar exercises as games

Six quick games built on the verb tables you meet in real stories. Two minutes a day keeps the forms alive, and the verbs come from what you read, so the practice stays real.

Biblical or modern Hebrew?

Dvash is modern Israeli Hebrew: the language of today's news, songs and streets. If you have studied biblical Hebrew, you will recognise the alphabet, the roots and much of the grammar, and you will meet thousands of words the Bible never needed. Reading modern Hebrew every day is the fastest way to make the language live, and it makes the old texts easier too.

You need the alphabet first

Dvash is a reader. It assumes you can sound out Hebrew letters, even slowly, and know a few hundred words. If you are still learning the alphabet, start with a free alphabet course and come back in two weeks. Level 1 will be waiting.

Relevant, easy to use, and enjoyable. Amazing! Most intuitive, practical, and results oriented language app I’ve ever used. Very helpful to have the audio. My conversational skills have really improved.

An amazing app. This app has been very well planned and thought about. It has news articles that are just long enough to consolidate Hebrew learning but also has a range of options from beginner to expert. The audio provides the opportunity to hear words and phrases as many times as you want which is great. Also there is the option to turn nikkud on or off. There are songs as well to listen to following Hebrew lyrics. Customer service is really person centred and helpful. This is a really great affordable app with real people caring about their product. I fully recommend it.

Questions learners ask

  • How much Hebrew do I need to start?

The alphabet and a few hundred words. If you can read a simple sentence slowly, level 1 will work, and every word has translation, audio and nikud on tap. If you cannot read yet, learn the alphabet first and come back.

  • How long does it take to learn Hebrew with Dvash?

There is no honest number. What we can say: ten minutes a day, every day, beats two hours on Sunday. Readers tell us the daily habit is what moves them, and one wrote that their Hebrew had never improved so much in a month.

  • Can I learn Hebrew with songs?

Yes, and it is the part people love most. Every song comes with line-by-line translation, audio in sync and every word tappable. Melody and rhythm make words stick in a way that word lists never manage.

  • Do I need to live in Israel to use Dvash?

No. Many Dvash readers live outside Israel. The app works anywhere, in English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian and Arabic, and today's story arrives every weekday wherever you are.
